Old Choral Hall

About the Project

Aspec delivered the major seismic strengthening, structural upgrade, and heritage refurbishment of the Old Choral Hall for the University of Auckland.

Originally constructed in 1872, with significant additions in 1925 and 1932, the three-year project required careful removal of unsympathetic alterations while preserving and restoring the building’s historic fabric.

Temporary structural support was designed and coordinated by Aspec, alongside integration of new structural steel and services using BIM modelling. Salvage and reuse formed a key part of the works, with bricks from multiple eras cleaned and reinstated, and original timbers re-profiled for incorporation into the refurbished building. During construction, numerous historic discoveries were uncovered – including concealed windows, skylights, plaster cornices, a long-lost plaque from the Albert Barracks Wall, an original well predating the building, and even a litter of kittens beneath the floorboards!

Delivered through close collaboration with the client, consultants, and heritage specialists, the project was a fantastic process and a result the entire team is proud of. This project showcases Aspec’s expertise in complex heritage restoration where structural integrity, conservation, and craftsmanship must work seamlessly together.
