Remuera Rail Station
About the Project
Aspec delivered the seismic strengthening and heritage restoration of the historic Remuera Railway Station and Signal Box for Auckland Transport. Both Category A heritage buildings are nationally significant, with the Signal Box being one of only two remaining in New Zealand that remains unmodified and in its original location. Delivered within an active rail and public transport environment, the project required close collaboration with Salmond Reed Architects, heritage consultants, and the client to preserve the buildings’ historic fabric while improving their structural resilience.
Completed in two separable portions, the works included seismic strengthening, structural and timber repairs, roof rehabilitation, external restoration, and comprehensive internal refurbishment. Original heritage features were carefully restored wherever possible, including pressed metal ceilings, timber joinery, period hardware, and historic railway fittings. Through a strong focus on conservation and craftsmanship, the project has preserved the heritage significance of both buildings while ensuring they remain safe, functional, and valued community assets for generations to come.
